If you are selling a product or a service and you really hope to connect with your customer, every page of your website must focus on your customer. The fact is that most people write their about me page wrong and do not focus on their customer and really write there about me page about themselves. This may seem like the right thing to do because after all the about me page is about you so many think that it should be focused on you but this really is an incorrect way of creating your about me page. If the purpose of your website is to sell a product or service to your customer that actually benefits them, then you want to tailor your about me page for your customer as well.
What most people do
If I am for example looking for someone to relieve my back pain or get the kinks out of my shoulders, then I would be looking for a massage therapist or a chiropractor. So I go to the website and see that the owner says he is 45 years old, he has been doing this for 25 years, grew up in Utah and went to school there, and got a lot of great recognitions for massage therapy. He is available for massage therapy and can help treat a lot of muscle soreness.
So if I read this in the about me page I would feel like it really does not connect with me or the problems that I typically have in regards to getting the kinks out of my shoulders or the pain out of my back. The about me page does not address solving a lot of my problems but this is exactly what many people focus on and this is how they structure their about me page.
What you should do
Instead of structuring your about me page like most people do you need to flip the mindset and move to focusing in on your customer rather than just focusing in about yourself, So I want to share with you an example from one of my friends about doing services in the dance business.
Her name is Agnieszka Maslanka. When I go to her about me or info page I see what most people do on their about me page. So if for example I am a beginner to dance and not really sure of myself because others who I have seen dance are so good, or maybe I am a more advanced dancer who wants to learn how to win competitions and I look at her about me page, I will see that she was born in Poland. She trained in hip-hop, contemporary, acrobatics and traveled across Europe with her dance troupe. In 2003 she came with her family to the sunny and snow-free Clearwater Florida USA and organized as well as choreographed small pieces with a youth group at her church. She is now an addition to Florida’s finest instructors, dancers, travels, competes. Currently performing at the Dance Company and so on. Towards the end, there is a small section that states that she is available for private lessons, choreography, judging, group classes, and event coordination. Now, this final piece is more geared towards me as a potential customer than the rest of the about me page.
The final portion in part relates to me because maybe I am looking for private lessons to better my dancing or maybe I am getting ready to go to a wedding and simply don’t want to look silly so I may want to choose a few private lessons. However, if you look at the page as a whole, you can see that 80 to 90 percent of the page is focused on Agnieszka whereas if we break it down, only about 10 percent is actually focused on the customer or consumer.
When we as consumers look through these pages, we are a little bit selfish and we are always thinking about what we can get out of it. So if I wanted to refocus this about me page onto the customer I would say something along the lines of this:
Hey my name is Agnieszka and I have been dancing for a little over 10 years
and in those 10 years, I have helped dozens of couples reach intermediate dancing
levels within their bracket. I have also helped many people win gold and silver
metals in lots of different tournaments and championships at dancing events.
If you are interesting in really honing in and focusing on your basics, your techniques,
and get rid of some of those mistakes that you commonly make, or maybe just get
involved with the people around your community and be more socially outgoing, than
go ahead and sign up for a private lesson with me by calling me at this…and this… number.
As you can see this really focuses more on what you can do for the customer rather than what happened in your past because now what has happened in the past is not really relevant to my customers or consumers.
