Hey, this is Sasha thanks for joining me for another video training lesson. In this video lesson what I want to do is share with you how to make this eBook cover for your amazon kindle book or any eBook that you’re going to create. It’s not that difficult except it takes a few minutes and once you get the hang of Photoshop it actually takes you a lot less time than outsourcing.
Now of course if you’re making this cover all the time, eventually you may want to start outsourcing this kinds of things. I’m going to share with you how to do this in less than about 15 minutes and you can also download the exact raw files on my website, which you can check the description for where this posted at and then download those files, that way you can open them up or work with me directly.
In either case, let’s get started.
Alright, in order to start creating our cover we’re going to need to create a new canvas. So we’ll go to file, new or you could use the shortcut control+N, just going to hit the new key right over here. As far as our pixel sizes go and our dimensions if you look on screen, I have a few dimensions right there set but the standard size as I look over here – what they’re doing right now is 2813 x 4500 pixels.
Once you have that we’re doing 72 on the resolution, you could bump that up to 150 or 300 which is a lot better for print. But I’m just going to leave that right here. It’s 2813 x 4500 right there.
This is our base canvas layout. It’s a 1:6 ratio proportion for the screen, for the cover. What we need to be now is to start working in it. Now, what I typically like to do is start with the text and then start adding into it but since we’re working on a cookbook and we’re looking to create a cookbook based cover. I like to start with the visual element first, just to see what things are placed and get an idea there and then kind of manipulate the texts and then add the embellishment after that.
So, why don’t we pick out an image here real quick and put it on screen?
Okay, here’s my based image that I have that I imported right there, in either case what I need to do now is kind of manipulate it a little bit and see how was that I want to design my cookbook cover. So you could either put an image something like this, you could do it like that. It really just depends on the image itself and then how you’re designing and developing the overall cover.
In our case here and in our situation what I’m going to do is just kind of put it off to the side over here by just dragging it a little bit. And I want to play with a darker background as well. So I kind of want the food to stand out. I can either play with the darker background so just to give you a little insight, I’m going to create a new layer real quick, take the paint brush and just play with darker background just to see which way I want to go with it. I could kind of start with a darker tone right there and make the food standout or the other approach is to make it a little more wider which is sometimes for cookbooks also tends to workout really well, just depends on the type of photo that you have and what you’re looking to do.
Figuring out where to put the texts
In this case, in this scenario I might just do white because it will give me a little more flexibility for the texts. That’s the role I might go with why don’t I go with that approach? Here, my next step would be to ultimately start figuring out where the texts would go.
If I look at this right here, my next stage is to ultimately figure out that texts and what I want to do now is go into this texts tool right there and I’m just going to put down some texts. If I get rid of the zoom then area, I’m going to start with let’s just say picking a title out and playing with the few different fonts.
Alright, so I basically choose my fonts here, I have a few different variations of but that sometimes takes a little bit of time so I’ve cut right into it. I’ve chosen the fonts that I have is Gotham Media regular and then the other font that I’ve chosen is the Century School Book italic font. It kind of gives me those two fonts that I want to play with. I usually don’t like to play with too many fonts and that is because it makes things disconnected. Two fonts is usually pretty good.
Play with sizing and positioning
Now, what I want to do is play with the sizing and positioning. For example, what I want to do – let’s just say we’re calling this 30-minute breakfast meals. I want to start playing with the different sizes and each one of these is a different layer if you look over to the right over here. We have a different layer for each kind of texts phrase and that allows me to modify the color, that allows me to move them around pretty easily, that’s kind of ultimately what I’ve done.
What I want to do is right here, as I go ahead now, start playing with it. Now, I’m just going to play with the sizing. I want the 30 minute to be pretty big. I want it also make sure I give myself a little bit of space if I just drag some guides over here around this area. I want to give myself a little room just in case – just some spacing for the texts for just different devices. Make sure my titles are just right in there.
Make this right there, 30 somewhere around like that – well, we’ll play around with this here in a minute. And now I’ll take these to select them, holding the shift. Now, I have those two layers selected, reduced that size just a little bit more and then the minute I can bump that up a little bit, holding shift while I do this.
We’ll get rid of this breakfast meals, put it more towards the bottom so I could also put another guide right here just to see the bottom of my 30-minute meals here. If I hold control + alt and just use the scroll wheel I get to zoom in with the mouse and just zooming in, so there I am. I’m looking at this right there. And there we go.
That’s kind of the level that I kind of want that and now play with again the sizing. While holding shift like I reduced that 30 using shift and up and down arrows I can start moving things around and again holding those two layers, moving those around.
Now, you can see I kind of have that basic position. I want to play with the breakfast meals. If I want it I could do all caps, let’s just see if we need to reduce it right here, so I could do something like this.
Typically cookbooks they’re a little bit more flare-y or they’re a little bit more elegant in the texts. I tried to make it clean and readable but still a little more elegant. So that’s kind of what I’m doing right here. The other approach that I could do is split this apart and just duplicate that layer. And have breakfast and then meals on a second line.
This will allow me to do it as I have breakfast right here I could move breakfast over right here. And I could resize this, go like this and meals again I could just resize it or I could actually modify the font size and just kind of move it like this.
Again, it’s just up to you where you want to position it. You can play with it all this things and play around with this. Based on the positioning, based on what you like, based on the sizing that you want, sometimes I’ll play with it to see if making it even bigger is helpful or not. This just takes time to just see what you like what you don’t like, maybe you want breakfast a little bigger. Again, I’ll just play with the sizing just to kind of get an idea of how I want this and now I kind of have that right there lined up and there we go. That’s kind of based setup for our book that we have.
The next thing I want to do is also positioned in maybe the author names. That again I can take the minute and just duplicate that layer. And I can say right here, let’s just say – I’ll just write my name in there for now. You know I haven’t written a cookbook yet. I don’t plan too but in either case right there you could say a little bit larger. You don’t want it too big because again remember the point is to sell a book not necessarily to broad your name unless you’re a very famous kind of author already in that space.
I could do something like that and that’s a baseline design for our book that gives us some rough idea of what we want.
Now, what I could do is start playing with colors, I could start playing with a little bit more of this whiteness here that I did right around this breakfast meals. So there’s a few different variations here that I could now do and play with. Basically one of the first ones that I could do is pretty obvious as I could make this a lot bigger right there. Move this a little to the side and now I can – let’s just play with this white area here. Let’s just start it real slow. I’m heading 33 on the opacity, I had the brush right there so that way it doesn’t float to quickly. Now, I’m just clicking, just blending things out.
Now you can see that starting to come alive a little bit more. So we still have that picture in there, but we’re just slowly blending it out. I could also move the name – the author name a little bit to the right or to the left actually and that kind of gives me a little bit more of a little better positioning right there.
What I could do is move the 30-minute breakfast meals just a little bit up just to give myself some space. You start looking at okay what colors do I want to play with and how do I want to play with these alignments of things. So the 30-minute , what I could do is put this in a new folder. So I”m going to hit the new folder, I’ll just drag it up above everything. I can rename that to 30-minute and I’ll right click and do blending options. And now when I go over here, and I do blending options my color overlay that I do is I could pick something directly from the food color, the picture, or so. I could do something like that, I could do yellow, I could do green, I could do something exactly from the color. I think green worked out really well, so we’ll start kind of the green tone. I do want it to pop, make it a little bit stronger, a little bit darker and then the other thing that I could do is I could do a slight drop shadow but I would make it probably another kind of green or lighter green.
It will be very, very subtle. You could also do a little outer glow for that. Again this would be very, very subtle because if you’ll do it too strong it will just – it will take away too much attention. So let me just show you how too strong is too strong. You can see right that it’s a little too strong. If we drop that back just very very subtle, very very soft. And just make it very minor.
You can even do a very light green, sometimes that gives it a little bit of a hint of something. And if you zoom in just barely be able to see it but it gives it a little bit of something when people look at those covers, just pops it out just a little bit. And then that breakfast meals so I’ll do the same concept.
I could just copy this, previous effect, copy layer style and just paste it right click and let me just see where is the paste. Maybe it’s a little bit farther over here. So if I go into the breakfast paste layer style, you could see I’ve now created that same layer style.
Now, all I need to do is kind of edit it. I’ll go to the color, again I’ll probably choose a different color now since breakfast we already have the green typically we want earthy colors. Doing yellow would be pretty good, it’s just on white it doesn’t stand out as much. So sometimes I’ll drop that back into maybe of an orange and green. Even though yellow is really good for the eggs, so sometimes that will work like this. Here we have the yellow and potentially if you do the outer glow, let’s just say a little bit darker. You might be able to get away with it. Sometimes you can’t.
Probably on this when you really just can’t do that, so let me go into the colors and I’m just going to go in and maybe go with – could do this plum but probably not. The yellow is a good one, so I’m just going to put it into a more orange-y, red or coral tone. So that will kind of give us that affect otherwise it will be too light. And then the other approach is the meals. Again, I could go right there. I don’t like using full black, it’s a little strong on this kinds of covers, so typically with recipe I do kind of like gray right there. And there we go, that’s kind of what we want.
Now for the author right here, sometimes just doing the author like that is, it doesn’t stand out or anything. So what I might do is just draw something with a rectangle right right here. So go ahead and create a new layer and then what I’ll do is I’ll fill it with let’s just say a black for now. But then what I can do again is right click blending options, color overlay, I could use a yellow which now I’m getting my yellow from that egg. I’m just selecting it, so I could just take that yellow from there. That’s the yellow color I want, now I could take that texts, make it that gray that we have again. I don’t like using too many colors. Just a few tones and then I’ll take the polygon tool, go back to my layer for that little line right there. I”m just trimmed off a little bit out an angle. So it just gives a little bit of an angle look. If you want you could add a little affect to it. So rather than the color overlay, you could also do like a slight little drop shadow and things like that. You could even do a light little gradient on it. But on either case it gives just a little bit of extra right there on that cover.
There you go, that’s kind of the basic cover that you have right there for this cookbook cover. And I’m going to save this right here and you’ll be able to get this on my website.
So in order to get this just check out the description right below and you’ll be able to download it from the post that this is listed on. If you want to convert this really quickly and you don’t like the white background, I’m going to show you right here how you do that.
Right now we use that white background right there, what I’m going to do is I’m going to hide that white background and I could actually just delete some of these but instead what I’ll do is I’ll make a new layer right here. Now you could see kind of already I have a nice foundation framework. What I could do is again, use the polygon tool right there and just kind of draw right around it. Then what I could do is just go to edit and then I”m going to go to fill. I’ll do black and there we go that’s kind of our main fill. I’ll go ahead and also reduce the opacity just a little bit. Now you kind of hide away some of those things in the background.
Now you could see all of a sudden that cookbook has transformed. This of course you need to adjust some of the tones, so I might go ahead and hide that little layer right there. I might change the 30 minutes, just double clicking that and I can go ahead and change it to maybe a yellow tone. I could just select something like from the egg right there, just make it a 30 minute egg colors. Just choosing a color, none of course you could fine tone and choose the appropriate color. I’ll go ahead and choose that the outer glow I might not even need, same with the drop shadow. The breakfast, now what I will do is I’ll just – the color that I’ll choose is probably going to be white and then the meals again I could just make it yellow as well. Because it’s gray right now. I could make it orange but going in the same color would be 30-minute right there. I could do something to that affect.
If you want to be minute part to be let’s just say white, I can drag it out of there, I’ll copy the breakfast part. Let’s just say copy the layer over here, right click copy layers style and then we’ll do the minute part right there. Right click, paste layer style and then I’ll have 30-minute breakfast meals. You could see it’s right there lined up and it’s good to go.
Now the other part is the author, so we change the author name. Again, I could just make that white, let’s just go ahead use the texts tool for that, select white right there and there we go.
So we can move it around wherever you want and there’s your cover, there’s your basic cover in a black version for the book. If you want it with a little bit of a border you could go ahead and hit a new layer and right there. Go ahead and control + A to select everything, I’m going to go ahead and also just select the yellow as a color.
Now, what I do is stroke and my stroke that I want is I want it on the inside probably about the 15 points. It’s that yellow right there that we have. So just go ahead and you can see it came out a little bit smaller than what my intention was. And just a simply go to our resolution, I’ll just go ahead and apply it again, maybe go 55 here. And see if that looks a little bit better. So there we go, now we have our yellow version for the cookbook.
There you go, pretty much too simple cookbook covers for you, for your amazon kindle or any ebook cover that you want to make in photoshop it didn’t take us that long. And you can see it’s just playing around with a little bit of elements, throwing in the photo and it’s very simple, I didn’t make it too complicated. It’s just working with some shapes and being a little creative with your settings and opacity. Remember the key is the texts elements, you have a slight little picture and then rest should flow together.
Don’t overdo it, keep it simple and make sure that it attracts the appropriate attention because your cover in the end is your attention graber to get people to continue to click through and read more about the book. Read more about the description with the testimony and so on and so forth.
