Hey this is Sasha and thanks for joining me in this training video that hopefully will get you some more insights to editing your web page, or your business a little bit quicker and give you some more tools and insights for your skill sets to continue to grow and evolve our business.
In this training video, what I’d like to do is share with you some insight about building external links or linking within pages.
That’s what we’re going to do — build out some links and you show you how to work with some links within your page. So let’s take a look at the code.
The Basics
Here’s our basic code that we currently have. As you take a look at the page, this is what the page looks like. It’s a basic simple page. If we’re looking to add a little bit of a link after that paragraph, what I could do is create an anchor tag.
Basically, links are called anchor tags. The way that you write it is it’s a bracket A — and if I go ahead and just type in the closing bracket and then now I close that, they worked very similar to paragraph tag.

So you can see here, there’s the ending part. There’s the beginning part, and in there somewhere, goes in some text.
Now if I just save this right now, and I go into my page, and I just hit refresh, nothing really happens. Again, there’s no content there. If I could refresh here, you can see there is the anchor tag in the view source. That will show up there, but there’s nothing on the page.
That is because we have no content. That’s like putting in a paragraph tag in there, but there’s no content, right? So what we need to do is go ahead and write something like, ‘Click here to visit the website’. I’ll go ahead and save that, and now as you take a look and I hit the refresh, you can see you have a little bit of text right there.

Breaking Space and Linking
This kind of created it in this one line which goes with the image and that is because we don’t have a breaking tag for the image because we have this link and then the image goes right after it. In fact, we need to put that image on the next line.
The way we do that is we go ahead and add that BR, or the breaking space. So I can do that before the image right here, or right after the anchor tag. It’s really the same thing. There’s no difference. So, I’ll go ahead and hit save. We’ll go back, take a look and there it is.

It’s really the same thing. There’s no difference. So, I’ll go ahead and hit save. We’ll go back, take a look and there it is.
If I want a few extra lines in there, I could add a couple more spaces in there in which case I do. But the issue here is this part is still not linked. So how do I go ahead and link this part?
I need to use an attribute just like we used an attribute here with the Width or the ALT tag. There are attributes within links. The way you do that is it’s the HREF.
You can see the attribute right there that pops up. Now, I could link this globally, or be going into a website like Google.com, I’m going to go ahead and just type it in — http:Backstageincome.com — go ahead hit save and now as I do the preview — let’s take a look first at the code. There are a few BRs that we added or breaking spaces.

Now, I could link this globally, or be going into a website like Google.com, I’m going to go ahead and just type it in — http:Backstageincome.com — go ahead hit save and now as I do the preview — let’s take a look first at the code. There are a few BRs that we added or breaking spaces.
Here’s our attribute HREF. Notice that I put a space right there. Then I want to have — there’s the text. So as we refresh, there are a few line spaces and as I click that link, you can see the file goes to Backstageincome.com. And you do need an internet connection to make this work.
Target Attribute
As I go ahead and go back into this, right now it opens up in the same browser. We can continue to add another attribute in here, so another attribute is TARGET.
Target attribute allows you to either open it in a new browser, a pair of browsers, a top browser, most of the time, right now, it’s opening up in its own browser, the self. That’s the default. You don’t even have to mark it.

Here, the way you write that is you put in the attribute TARGET, and then what you’ll do is type ‘self’. That is what it’s set up to do. That is a natural way. Let’s just say, ‘click here to visit’, so we’ll keep it on one line. That is the natural way that links are working on most sights. I go ahead and hit refresh.
Click here to visit, it’s opening up in the same tab. So we could see how that link really works. But if I go ahead and let’s say, I duplicate this — and I’ll change this to — ‘this should open in a new tab’.
I’m going to add a breaking space right there, so that goes on a new line, then go add another one just in case. And add another one under the image. But this one, we’ll type in blank.

The Blank Tab
This is a blank tab. It should open up a new tab, Here as I take a look here on this one, go ahead and hit refresh. So take a look, if I click here to visit, this opens up in the same tab. But if I go ahead and click this one, you can see a new tab pops up so that way, people don’t lose their spot.
In general, most of the links that you set up unless them and so on — convert them on a general basis, they’re going to open up in the same tab. But if you need them to open up in a new tab, or a new window, you would use this blank code right there.
There is also another variation to this which is — these are a couple of variations, I don’t personally use them at all really — there’s a top tag, and there’s also a parent tag.
Most of the time these are just for other purposes, like if you’re on a frame or something like that. So always research your attributes. You’re not going to memorize all of them unless you’re in the web design field.

The main ones you’ll need to know is the ‘self’ and the ‘blank’ tags. Those are the main two that you need to know. If you’re looking to link an image, let’s say we’re trying to link this image or picture that we have, here on the bottom — so let’s just back track a few of these just so they’re all on one line.
Linking and Image
For looking to link this image, and have it clicked — right now I’m clicking but nothing happens. If I wanted to click and go somewhere, I could go ahead and just do a ‘href’ and then let’s link it into my other website.
So we’ll do http:www.rise2learn.com and then close it off and then I have to add in the wrap right there at the end closing a tag, because that’s the whole image. You can see how that’s now — the image became a nested element within the anchor tag.
I’ll go ahead and save that, and as you go and look at the picture, you can see — well, there are a few of those that I added those links in there, but as you look at the image, there’s the anchor tag. There’s the image. There’s the closing anchor tag.

As I click this image you can see it changes into a pointer hand now, and I click that picture, you can see it takes me to the rise2learn website. So that’s how you create a link directly into a certain page. The question may be, “Okay, well, how do I do this within my own website?” Well, you don’t need the
Well, you don’t need the HTTP so– just like linking images that we’ve talked about before. Let’s just say I clean this up, get rid of the ‘self’. Get rid of some of these other ones. I don’t need that image either right there. So get rid of some of that code. So, how do I link within it?
Linking Within Your Website
Well, again, you need a second file. So this one file is called mypage.01, so let’s just say, I’ll link to myincome.html. This would be the name F the file. If I go into this page, and I hit refresh, you can see if I click here to visit, you can see it’s trying to take me to myincome.html. But that page does not exist.

So what I’ll do is I’ll just quickly create a page. I’ll say, here is my income. I’m just going to briefly create this right there, and this is the myincome.html page, go ahead and save it.
If you look at the folders that I have right there — there is the myincome.html, there is the mypage.01, so it’s linking right there, so you have to make sure that the names match up and they appear that they do.
Now let’s take a look to see how this works. So I’m going to go ahead and bring up the browser. Go ahead and go back real quick, hit refresh.
I’ll go ahead click here to visit, and you could see here is Myincome. The page is coming up. It seems to work and we’re linking just fine.
That’s how you go ahead and do a quick link to a regular page on its own. And you make it link up just fine within your own page.
If it was in a different directory, you would just go ahead and type in that directory, say it was located in images, or maybe reports, I changed that, right there — what I would do is, say this folder, was in reports, again, I would just move Myincome into reports and now as we take a look right here, you can see if I refresh the file was not found.

But if I go here, you can see and I zoom in, reports is right there. That’s how you link up the images. That’s how you link up into regular pages, even within your website, in order to make those links work.
