Hey, this is Sasha and thanks for joining me here for another HTML lesson. I want to share with you this HTML lesson as you continue to either build your own build your own business website or continue to evolve in growing your business.

Today it’s all about formatting your HTML and as you format your HTML it’s all about bolding, underlining, italic, striking text, mono-spacing text. So it’s all about looking at the format of your text. That’s what we’re going to cover as you continue to build and evolve your business on line.

Basic Codes

As we take a look at a basic website right here, here are some of the basic codes that we have. What I’ve done, in fact, in order to speed up the process is I do have some key bindings and Sublime text right here.

If you go to preferences and go to key bindings — what I’ve done is set a few of these up so that way when I hit, let’s say control B or the B tag, and you’ll see it right here, it’ll create the strong element.

If I hit control 1, it’s the H!, H2, H3, control P for paragraph, control I for italic.

Underlining

What I can do is actually create another one. So let’s say I want the underline right here, I could do control U for underline. And what I’m going to do here is just change this to U tag right there and then change this part right here to U.

I’ll go ahead save that, and now what you can see is if I want one of these elements to be underlined, I could just go ahead and hit control U and you can see it puts in the tag there.

So if I just hit control S to save that and go to my website, you can see that the underline shows up right there. Here is the menu. So I can go back right there and undo that part.

Bolding

Of course, you could type this code out so in order to bold things, typically instead of B, they used to use B, but now they’ve changed it too strong. Now you could probably still use the B tag. It should work,

If I go ahead and do that, and hit the refresh button, it’s a little difficult to see because our heading tags are already bold.

If I go back and let’s just say, I undo this part and let’s say, I bold Business Launch Pad, right there, you can see it right there. I’ll go ahead, refresh this page and once I hit the refresh button, you can see right there that tag is bolded.

Now I accidentally add in an extra little bracket that you see right there.

So if we go back, here it is. Here are the two brackets. I’ll go ahead and remove one of those. You could go ahead and still use the bold tag, however, the normal procedure nowadays is using the strong tag.

If I go ahead and type out “strong” and then I’ll close that tag right there, hit save, or control S, go back, and you can see right there the area that was bolded.

Putting it All Together

If I’m looking to do something that’s italic, let’s say how to accelerate it into hyper drive, the way that you would do this is — it’s called emphasis — so what you’re going to do is — it’s called e-m nowadays. In the past it was I. You could use I if you’d like. We’re going to use e-m. So if I go ahead do e-m, you can see that when I refresh, “how to accelerate it into hyper drive” right there is italicized.

Now if I go ahead and do I — and I right there. I’ll go back right here. Hit the refresh, you can see nothing has really changed. It still works just fine. Now let’s say I want “accelerate” to be underlined, and I also want it to be bold.

So what do I do? Well, I can go ahead and do strong. Use the strong tag which I hit just control B in my case. You could type those things out. And now you can see that right there. The word “accelerate” is bolded and it’s also italic. So this is where we’re getting into further, nesting elements.

You have the italicized within the paragraphed tag. You have the strength within the italicized tag. And if I want to underline “hyper drive”, let’s just say, I can hit control U. And that will, as you look at the text. It actually takes it to the next line.

So let’s delete a couple of words here, just so we have it on one line. It’s easier to read. So you can see hyper drive right there, it is underlined, but it’s also italicized. So you could see here we’re italicized, we’re bold there, and we’re underlined there.

Let’s take a look at what that does. You can see it right there, the hyper drive is underlined. And you can do quite a lot with this as you can see. So I could do bolding and underlining right there. And if I go ahead and hit save and now refresh. You can see there it is. There is our change that continues to make more and more emphasis or formatting within our tag.

Now it’s all just about adding things in. You could put the underline within it. It doesn’t matter if I put the underline in here inside the bold or the strong area. You could do it that way. It wouldn’t make any difference. So it all comes down to mixing and matching these things. As you can see, it can get a little confusing as you start looking at this.

One thing with Sublime text that’s great is when you’re looking at this, you can see how this little line right there is underlined and then that line is underlined. So it tells you that this goes with that right there. This one goes with that one. This one goes with that one. So it tells you which one is the parent and which one is the child. That’s why it’s important for you to properly nest things and organize things.

If you really got confused, you could ultimately break these apart on a line by line basis so that way you could say, okay, this is italicized. My paragraph tag is there. This one is bolded. Then this one is strong and you could do it like this if you really wanted to.

Even put this on another line. And you could do something like that if you’d like. And if I hit control S for save, and refresh it, you can see it doesn’t do anything there. If I refresh the HTML code, you can see there that the HTML code has changed, but on our page, it has not changed simply because again, it takes out all those line spaces that are empty. It’s not going to read them so it allows you to organize that code.

However, you want to look at it because it’s just reading the code and the output. It’s taking this whole line, even though it’s multiple lines but for many people, it’s difficult to understand. It’s really reading it as one space. Not a line, but one space. So that’s one key thing and point to remember.

If you did want to make it an extra space, you’d have to use that B or tag, or breaking space tag. But in this case, in this scenario, if this paragraph was confusing for you, then you could break it apart. But in our case, you can see this is one whole paragraph and inside, we just did a bunch of formatting.

If I went ahead and undid most of that, you’re probably not going to get that crazy with it. You’ll probably just bold a few things here or there. So if you look at this right here, I might just remove this. There’s our formatting, save it. Take a look. There’s our clean code.

If I look at it back here, you can see there it is. Nothing is going on and nothing is happening. If I want to just bold the word accelerate, I just add the strong tag right there, save it, and there it is. There’s our accelerate word and it’s bolded. That’s how simple it is when it comes to some basic tagging.

Formatting Tags

Now there are a few other formatting tags that you may want to look at and learn. These are the main ones, but one other one that you may want to look at is “strike”. I don’t usually use this one. But in either case, if you did want to strike something out, you could go ahead and write strike and then a closing tag strike.

Save that and as we go ahead and refresh, you could see how it strikes out certain text. Normally, for me, I would just delete something, but if you’re an editor for, let’s say a newspaper, and you want to strike something out and there is a correction, in that case, you might use that strike tag.

So there you go. Those are some of the HTML formatting tags. Now I didn’t mention the TT tag or the mono-space tag. There’s also a superscript or subscript if you decide to do that. Again, very less commonly used tags.

But for example, the mono-script tag is not used anymore in the HTML 5 version. So tags will change from time to time depending on their needs, uses and how the HTML continues to evolve.

It’s important for you to stay up to date with some HTML content and may read some of the forms and some of the updates that happen along the lines, because as this video continues to age, there may be new tags that are created. Some are changed, some are modified, but the core structure is still the same.

So learn the base principles — the primary things and you’ll continue to tweak things as you continue to evolve and as HTML continues to evolve. Thanks for joining me on this video.
