In this post, we’re going to cover some mistakes that most people make when it comes to building and growing their email list.
Let’s get started with our quick little list and also give some detail and background behind it.
Mistake #1 – Single Opt-in
People simply have a single opt-in.
If you’re getting started in building an email list and you think that a specific book or cheat sheet is an excellent idea for a giveaway, think again.
Remember that there are only so many people that are interested in that email cheat sheet.
There are only so many people that are interested in that e-book.
There are different topics of e-books that you could create, such as:
- a textbook
- a how-to book
- Q&A book
- experts book
Let’s say you’re talking about woodworking. Well, I could interview ten experts, and somebody might want that e-book to figure out what’s the best way to work with wood.
Then somebody else might want to find out what are the tools that I need to be able to start woodworking. People are at different points in their lives.

We create a whole bunch of opt-ins, and you can make these public or private. It just depends on the matter of personal preference.
You create a lot of different opt-ins that people can download, and if you create these private, you can promote these through ads or advertisements.
Then you can collect those email lists through that way. You need to have multiple opt-ins because you don’t know what people are interested in or craving to give you their email address.
Mistake #2 – Not Tagging
Let’s start with an example.
If somebody’s interested in our business (passive income), you need to tag them right.
The reason is if I don’t tag them as a person that’s interested in passive income, how to know what offers to send to them later.
Maybe there’s a person that’s interested in YouTube. How to know what course to send them?
If somebody is looking to look at YouTube productivity hacks or tips, then I might want to tag them as persons into YouTube stuff.
Next, if they’re interested more in niches or passive income strategies, than I know, they’re into the niche passive income stuff.
Tagging people is crucial because then you know that a particular person is interested in specific topics. Then you can send specific targeted offers to that person.
Mistake #3 – Lack of Consistency
The truth might be that you’re not consistent with building and growing your email list.
Ask yourself these questions and be honest to yourself:
- Are you sending the emails often enough?
- Are you going to send the same type of emails where people can build a connection?
If you’re sending one email that’s very spamming and then another one that’s building a relationship – there’s no consistency there.
People like shows and why they watch one show to the next show to the next show… Meaning episodes one, two, three, and four.
They’re simple consistent. It continues to the flow of that relationship building or the storyline. And for you as well as if you first talk about your dog and then all of a sudden talk about opt-ins and making money and then your hair – there’s no consistency.
But if you’re always talking about hair, dogs, or coffee, then these are the three main topics of conversation.
As long as you keep it along with those same 2, 3, or 4 factors are those same elements in your stories and your emails that still brings a sense of consistency.
I’m not saying it’s all has to be about business. All I’m saying is if you have 2 to 3 main topics or points of conversation, it’s okay. And you’ll keep things consistent.
Mistake #4 – Not sending enough emails
People are always worried when they first start an email list that they may be sending too many emails.
The reality is if they’ve given you their email address, they want to receive your information. They want to receive content from you. That means you are technically doing a disservice if you don’t give them more.
And remember, if you’re truly honest with them and want to help them out – why not send them more help, more content, more information?
Of course, if they’re not interested in it or when times change, then they will probably unsubscribe from your email list.
Be sure to send enough emails to them to keep that relationship going.
Mistake #5 – No Connection
If you’re not sending enough emails – it’s tough to build a connection. Also, if you’re not consistent, it’s tough to build a relationship.
Pro tip: Get a little more personal. Throw in a short story or something. You don’t need to tell everybody your medical problems or the problems that your kids are having. Instead, try with some small story about coffee that you tried or if you’ve visited some exciting places.
That connection can be through that consistency through elements that are not even that personal. You don’t need to get into someone’s personal life to build a connection with someone.
Mistake #6 – Not enough value
If you’re talking about random subjects and you’re not providing beneficial value, that can be a problem.
Your subscribers must have some value that they can use in the future to help their lives improve, growth, to save money…
It lacks that relationship building concept if there is no value for your subscribers.
Here’s one hard question to ask yourself: Why would they stick around?
The number one advice for you is to have enough value. It doesn’t matter if you can save them money, make them laugh or giggle. Maybe they learn how to do something.
All those things have some value to a person. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a monetary value. However, some kind of value is essential.
Mistake #7 – Not Automating
One of the main problems might be if you’re still manually setting up your emails and sending them out in a basic format. If you’re not automating things, that is something you need to start doing.
Pro tip: Set up a system or structure where you can tag people as they get into your newsletter list. Then they get another email in a few days.
That’s the best way to go about automating things. When you set up a system to automate things, it makes your life a lot easier.
I’ll show you one of our automation here. We’re using MailerLite in my campaign.
Here’s the onboarding that we just created recently.
When a subscriber joins this onboarding group, it gives a flow diagram.
You can see there things like this:
- wait three minutes and send this email
- wait 70 hours send this next email
- wait 24 hours send that email
It flows into a little pattern in the diagram.
That way, you can see how these emails are doing. Everybody that signs up goes through this onboarding process. It is just automating the process, and we do the same thing with our email list for the opt-ins.
Let’s say that somebody gets one of our books or freebies. Then it might send them five, 10, 25 emails about different tips and strategies or how to make your first thousand dollars online.
And maybe at the end of those 10 or 25 emails, they might get a cool coupon code or offer for one of our courses or products.
